Home / More than Words: Why Keywords Matter to Search Engines
If you are not using keywords properly, your website might as well be invisible. Keywords are the search terms that people put into a search engine, such as Google or Bing, to find a product or service. If your website does not come up on the first page, it is unlikely that potential customers will find you online. Here are some tips that will help you use keywords to make your website rank better.
If you only use keywords that relate to the name of your company, you will only reach your existing customers. You need to use keywords that people would use to search for your product or service if you want new customers to find you online.
If you select keywords that are highly competitive on search engines, it will be difficult for you to achieve a high ranking. However, if you select keywords that don’t have much traffic, you will rank well, but your keyword will rarely be searched. You need to identify keywords or terms that have enough traffic to have an impact without being overly competitive.
Website content that is stuffed with keywords is unpleasant to read and doesn’t even rank well on search engines. The best approach is to find two or three keywords that genuinely relate to your website and to integrate them into your content. Remember that you are writing for people not search engines.
By themselves the keywords won’t get people to read your website; it is all in the way that you present them. If your content grabs them, they’ll click on it. Most people will be more likely to click on a heading that says “Stomach Exercises You Can Do on Your Commute” than a generic heading like “Exercises for Your Stomach”. Always keep your target audience in mind when writing for your website.
Keywords are only one component of search engine optimization, but they are important. If you are serious about getting your website to rank better, you need to develop a complete SEO strategy.
